Empower Women Media aims to train an allied network of leaders in Nigeria in sharing the message of freedom of belief & inter-religious harmony with others. To promote these values and encourage dialogue, our team hosts live leadership training events and workshops throughout Nigeria. Events include expert speakers, panels, Q&A sessions, and discussions based on the Live What You Believe eCourse curriculum.

Africa Religious Freedom Film Festival Jos

September 19, 2024 – Empower Women Media hosted the Africa Religious Freedom Film Festival in Jos, Nigeria. This groundbreaking event brought together participants of all ages, including high school and university students, filmmakers, clergy, and government and religious leaders to discuss Freedom of Religion or Belief in Jos Plateau State.

Guests watched award-winning films from our 2024 Film Competition along with films from our Live What You Believe eCourse. Keynote speakers and panelists discussed the use of films and media as tools for promoting religious freedom.

Commemorative Awards as Ambassadors of FoRB were presented to five organizations: Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), Islamic Counseling Initiative of Nigeria (ICIN), Plateau Youth Council (PYC) and Jos Central Mosque.

Abuja

April 20, 2024 – Empower Women Media hosted its first Live What You Believe Leadership Training event in Abuja, Nigeria. This event gathered 138 courageous Muslim and Christian leaders who explored the benefits of religious freedom to support peace building, women’s empowerment, and building strong business economies. Panelists included Rev Fr Atta Barkindo, Sheikh Omar Mohammed, and Gloria Mabeiam Ballason.

FoRB Teens Connect in Jos

November 8, 2024 – Over 50 high school students from Muslim and Christian faiths gathered from 3 different high schools for this youth event, aiming to engage the next generation to embrace religious diversity and be champions for peace. The students watched short films, attended an interfaith panel discussions, and were given a badge as a reminder to be an ambassador for peace and unity. This event was co-hosted with Total Stage2Screen.

Africa Religious Freedom Film Festival Abuja

July 27, 2024 – Our team hosted the first Africa Religious Freedom Film Festival in Abuja, Nigeria. The film festival featured expert panel discussions and the award-winning films from our Nigerian media fellows, each addressing various aspects of religious freedom issues in Africa.

Polytechnic Institute

October 3, 2024 – Our team hosted a Live What You Believe event, where more than 100 participants completed our free online course and received a certificate of completion.

Jos Theological Seminary

April 21, 2024 – A number of seminary students gathered at this event for a robust discussion on interfaith collaboration and human rights issues. Students engaged in a Q&A session on topics that impact the lives of Nigerians of all beliefs.

Taraba State University

April 24, 2024 – Our team engaged with over 130 students and staff at the Law Faculty of the Taraba State University for an informative interactive workshop. Discussion topics delved into the role of legal frameworks surrounding fundamental human rights, including Freedom of Religion or Belief.

Plateau State Polytechnic Institute

July 18-19, 2024 – Over 250 students and faculty gathered for Live What You Believe leadership sessions at the Barkin Ladi and Jos campuses of Plateau State Polytechnic Institute.

Yola

June 29, 2024 – Our team hosted the “Youthful Move for Religious Freedom and Peace” event in Yola, Nigeria. Speakers and panelists encouraged youth to become peacemakers, instead of allowing religion to be used to persecute others. Leaders suggested that the attendees should meet with other young people more often and engage in conversations about these social topics of religion, discrimination, and violence.

Participants responded to the event with enthusiasm and expressed commitment to creating positive change in their own communities in Nigeria.

The event also presented the The Youth Interfaith Peace Ambassador award to Hon. Yohanna Sahabo Jauro, the youngest lawmaker in the Adamawa State House of Assembly.
